ABSTRACT

Wrongful convictions constitute a grave miscarriage of justice wherein innocent individuals are punished for crimes they did not commit, thereby allowing the actual perpetrators to evade accountability. The emergence of forensic science, particularly DNA profiling, has significantly transformed the criminal justice system by introducing a highly reliable method of identifying individuals. This research paper critically examines the causes and consequences of wrongful convictions and evaluates the pivotal role of DNA evidence in detecting, preventing, and rectifying such errors. It further analyses systemic deficiencies revealed through DNA exoneration cases, the legal framework governing the admissibility of scientific evidence, and the limitations associated with DNA technology. The study concludes by emphasizing the need for legal and institutional reforms to ensure the effective integration of forensic science in the administration of justice.
