ABSTRACT

Green banking has emerged as a crucial pillar of sustainable finance, aiming to reduce the environmental footprint of financial institutions while promoting eco-friendly investments. This article explores the growing trend of green banking practices in Indian banks, driven by increasing environmental awareness, global sustainability goals, and rapid digitalization. It highlights key green initiatives undertaken by Indian banks, including digital and paperless banking, green ATMs, green branches, green loans, green bonds, and environmentally oriented CSR activities. The study also examines the range of green financial products such as green credit, ESG investment portfolios, and green mortgages that support sustainable development. Furthermore, the article analyzes the major benefits of green banking—environmental, economic, and strategic—alongside the challenges such as high initial costs, low awareness, technological barriers, regulatory gaps, and resistance to change. The findings emphasize the importance of strengthening green banking initiatives to promote financial inclusion, environmental conservation, and long-term national sustainability. The study underscores the need for enhanced policy support, technological investment, and awareness-building to foster effective implementation of green banking in India..
