GENDER DISCRIMINATION IN EDUCATION - PERCEPTION OF STUDENT TEACHERS

ABSTRACT

Discrimination based on gender is one of the primary impediments to education which affects both Boys and Girls. In some regions, boys’ educational opportunities are limited by gender roles that force them to work rather than attend school. These financial responsibilities are often increased in boys’ adolescent years, making it difficult for them to complete secondary school in some regions. However, in many parts of the world, girls are most often the victims of gender discrimination as they pursue an education. The purpose of this investigation was to find out the opinion of student teachers of education towards gender discrimination. This paper concentrates upon the gender discrimination i.e. the attitudinal problem of the society towards girl child education.  It is the matter of concern for the human rights that the right to equality and right to education in India  is still denied to girls even in the four walls of a home. Hence, the paper strongly advocates the promotion of women education at all levels.

Descriptive survey method is used in this present study. Population for this study is the student teachers of education undergoing   Bachelor of Education students, pursuing their studies in Hyderabad, India. Purposive sampling technique used to select the sample for this research. The sample for this research is 300 student teachers who are doing Bachelor of Education and Diploma in Elementary Education in Hyderabad, Telangana, India. A structured questionnaire consisting of 40 items based on different parameters to measure the opinion of student teachers towards gender discrimination was prepared as a tool for this study. The validity and the reliability of the tool is done. The analyzing data reveals that the boys and girls do not differ in their opinion, they are of the opinion that gender discrimination seen in our society at many instances and this discrimination should be eradicated and girls should be given equal opportunities for education and development.
