Abstract
We always sermonise human rights, but often forget that women are human beings and like their male counterparts that they are the nucleus of our civilisation, they have been different roles to play in the ever-changing social set up. But even after 60 years of independence women continue to live in a state of neglect and exploitation. Mainstreaming of women into the new and emerging areas of growth and globalisation is imperative. Globalised capital has reduced everything to a commodity and everyone to a consumer. Nowhere is this more evident than in the lives of women. Women bodies are commoditised especially in sexual trafficking. Women constitute the greater proportion of exploited labourers. So empowerment of women is needed. The paper examines the role of women in socio-economic development and how their participation in economy help achieving inclusive growth and sustainable globalisation. The paper finds that women participation in decision-making or inclusive governance is indispensable for achieving inclusive growth. Therefore, the change in attitude towards women has necessarily to be driven by the political process. It is naive to expect genuinely inclusive governance without inclusive politics or empowerment of women hitherto not having access to political power at different levels. The paper concludes that here is need to strengthen and streamline the role of women in the development of various sectors by harnessing their power towards nation building and to attain inclusive growth and sustainable globalisation.
