ABSTRACT

Aim of the Study: The The Indian government creates and executes policies and initiatives to address the social and economic wellbeing of its citizens. The aim the study intends to determine the degree of awareness among rural residents towards the various welfare schemes provided by government. The study also aims to identify the residents’ perception towards effectiveness of such schemes.

Methodology: This study is based on original research carried out in the community of Nidaghatta. which is located in Maddur Taluka, Mandya District in the state of Karnataka. The 60 residents of the village were identified for the study using Convenience Sampling. Survey was conducted through a well-structured interviewer administered questionnaire translated in local language Kannada for ease of data collection.

Findings: The study brings to light a low level of awareness about Government Schemes among residents of Nidaghatta village. However, the respondents who have availed the seschemes have expressed satisfaction towards the same. The study recommends measures to be taken to improve awareness of various schemes and subsidies provided by the Government.

Practical Implications: This study helps to draw inference about the perception of rural residents towards the welfare schemes designed and implemented by the central and state government. This inference could lead to identifying gaps and bottlenecks in implementation of these welfare schemes. Once the gaps are identified suitable and necessary action can be taken to minimize these gaps.

Originality / Value: The focus of the Central and State Government has been on rural development and raising rural residents' standards of living. Restricted awareness, red tapism, procedural delays, bureaucratic hurdles, and lack of accountability are some of the reasons that impact the effectiveness of government schemes. The success of these schemes depends on the awareness of citizens towards the schemes and effectiveness in its implementation.
