ABSTRACT
Background:Tinnitus is an auditory perception without an external acoustic stimulus and is often refractory to conventional medical therapy. In Unani medicine, tinnitus (Taneen wa Dawi) is attributed to diversion of morbid Humors (GhaleezAkhlat), and pathological gases (riyāḥ) towards the ear, compounded by dryness, malnutrition, and weakness of auditory faculties. Traditional Unani formulations, particularly medicated oils, have long been employed for local strengthening of the auditory apparatus. Conventional treatments yield variable results, prompting exploration of alternative systems of medicine. Roghan-e-Samā ‘at-Kusha, a classical Unani Otic formulation, has traditionally been used for auditory disorders including Tinnitus.
Objective: To evaluate the safety, and preliminary efficacy of Roghan-e-Samā ‘at-Kushaan Unani compound Otic oil, in patients suffering from subjective tinnitus attending Majeedia Unani Hospital, New Delhi.
Methods:A prospective, single-arm pilot study was conducted on patients diagnosed with subjective tinnitus. Participants received topical Roghan-e-Samā ‘at-Kusha ear drops (2 drops bd)for eight weeks. Severity of tinnitus was assessed using a Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and patient-reported relief in symptom.
Results:A reduction in mean VAS scores was observed after eight weeks of therapy, improvement in tinnitus intensity and associated discomfort. Patients with relatively recent onset of tinnitus demonstrated greater symptomatic relief in comparison to chronic onset of disease. No adverse events or local intolerance were reported during the study.
Conclusion: This can be concluded thatRoghan-e-Samā ‘at-Kusha is safe and potentially effective in reducing tinnitus severity. The findings are consistent with classical Unani principles and provide a foundation for larger, controlled clinical trials integrating Unani medicine into evidence-based otological care.
